Public Payphones – All local calls from payphones are free of charge by dialing 711. You do not need to use coins, a calling card or a prepaid card. Long distance calls can be billed through calling cards, prepaid calling cards or by calling collect.

Billing Preference – There is no charge for using Relay Iowa within your local calling area. Long distance call rates are determined by the carrier of choice. Tell the CA your preferred long distance carrier if you do not wish to use Sprint, the default long distance carrier. Relay Iowa gives you a number of billing options when you place intrastate, interstate or international calls. Please notify the CA of your preferred billing option:

  • Direct
  • Collect
  • Third Party
  • Local exchange carrier (LEC) calling card
  • Other long distance calling card
  • Prepaid phone card

Directory Assistance – Relay Iowa will relay Directory Assistance (DA) calls between TTY users and a directory assistance operator. Once the caller makes the request, the CA will connect to the DA operator. After obtaining the number, the caller may choose to place the call through Relay Iowa or dial it directly TTY to TTY.

International Call – Relay Iowa allows you to place and receive calls to and from anywhere in the world (using English or Spanish only). Calls originating from a country outside the US may also access Relay Iowa via 1-402-631-4412.

Answering Machine Retrieval – TTYs users can request Relay Iowa to retrieve messages from their voice answering machines or voice mail. To request answering machine retrieval, type SLAM with instructions or passwords and GA. The CA will type PLS PLACE YOUR HEADSET NEXT TO YOUR ANS MACHINE AND TURN ON GA. Place your headset on the speaker part of the answering machine until all messages have been retrieved. Then place the headset back on the TTY and type GA. The CA will type your messages.

Customer Profile – VCO, HCO, TTY, ASCII and Voice users may request a customer profile through Relay Iowa. With a profile, the CA uses your preferred answer type automatically when processing your call. Click here  to complete a Customer Profile or contact Relay Iowa Customer Care.
