The CapTel Process

Applying for a CapTel phone is a unique process. First of all, these phones can only be obtained by applying through Telecommunications Access Iowa (TAI). There is no other way to get this phone directly from the dealer without a voucher or a Captioned Telephone Purchase Authorization (CTPA).

The application process for a CapTel voucher is the same as the process for the other types of phones. You can also ask for a CapTel Phone with a USB Port (to hook up to an existing computer for a large visual display), headset or neckloop and/or a loud and flashing ringer. The voucher will cover 95 percent of the average cost of all pieces of equipment.

If you meet all the qualifications and are approved for a voucher, it will be mailed to you along with a letter instructing you to contact Weitbrecht Communications, which is our CapTel distributor to set up an order. Their contact information is printed on the letter.

If you exceed the income limit as stated in the “Do You Qualify” section, but you meet the other qualifications, you may purchase a CapTel phone with or without a USB Port with a CTPA. The retail price of the CapTel phone is $495.00, but the state discount rate with a CTPA is $350.00 plus $7.50 shipping. If you want a CapTel phone with a USB port, it is $65.00 extra.
