FAQs
How do I speed up the process of getting a voucher?
By answering all of the questions completely, you will speed up the
voucher process. If you have any questions regarding how to fill out
the application, please contact TAI. By not answering all of the questions,
you may delay the voucher process.
We are committed to prompt turnaround service. Completed applications
which meet all of the qualifications, will be processed and you can expect
to receive a voucher within one week.
Do I have to show proof of communication need, i.e., hearing loss or speech
impairment?
Yes. You must have an appropriate professional in the field of hearing
or speech sign the application form to verify that you have a need for
a specialized telephone.
Can I fax my application to TAI?
No. We need to have original signatures on voucher applications.
How do I know what telephone equipment would best meet my needs?
If you need assistance to determine what kind of equipment or services
to best meet your needs, contact the TAI office or one of the dealers—click
here to see a list of dealers. TAI also has a showroom in Des Moines—click
here for address and directions. You can stop by and try out the
different kinds of telephone equipment available. Our professional
associates will
demonstrate and discuss features that might best meet your needs.
Where do I buy telephone equipment once I receive my voucher?
TAI provides you with a list of dealers available throughout the
state and nationwide (by mail order). You can also find a list of dealers
by clicking here.
What if I change my mind and want to get a different phone?
Have your dealer contact TAI—that way we can make adjustments to
your voucher.
If you already purchased the equipment, contact the dealer to learn
their return policy. If you’re able to return the phone, the dealer
will work with you and TAI to process the necessary paperwork.
Do I have to give the telephone back?
No, the telephone is yours to keep.
What if the telephone needs repairs?
Since you own the phone, TAI suggests you contact the dealer directly
to see if you can repair or exchange the phone. If they’re not
able to repair or exchange the phone, contact the manufacturer.
We encourage voucher recipients to purchase a warranty for their phones.
How often can I reapply for telephone equipment?
Every five years you can reapply for equipment. If your hearing or
speech impairment needs change within five years, you may be eligible
to reapply. Contact TAI to learn more.
Can I purchase a CapTel phone on my own?
No. CapTel phones can only be obtained through the TAI program. If
you exceed the income guidelines, you can purchase a CapTel phone at
a discount through TAI. To learn more about CapTel, click
here. You may
also contact TAI.
